The University of Maryland School of Social Work is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to begin on September 1, 2017. The fellowship provides an opportunity to join an existing multi-disciplinary and multi-university research team conducting research related to the influence of employment context on cancer disparities, with a focus on the effects of low-wage work on cancer treatment decision making and outcomes. The fellow will be provided time, space, and mentoring to develop his/her early career scholarship.
The postdoctoral fellow will work primarily with Drs. Jennifer Swanberg (School of Social Work) and Kathleen Tracy (School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health) to analyze data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, (MEPS), a nationally representative survey conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) annually and the MEPS Experiences with Cancer Survivorship Supplement, collaborate on empirical papers to submit to leading journals, develop grant proposals, and take an active role in ongoing longitudinal clinical research project. Current or forthcoming projects include: (1) assessment of the cancer and employment factors that adversely affect short and long-term employment outcomes using the MEPS and MEPS Experiences with Cancer Survivorship Supplement; (2) implementation of multi-method longitudinal study of the effects of low-wage employment context on cancer care decision making and treatment outcomes among breast cancer survivors; and (3) other related research opportunities pertaining to the effects of employment context on cancer disparities. The postdoctoral fellow’s specific project-related responsibilities will be developed in consultation with Drs. Swanberg and Tracy, and may include project management, supervision of data collection, data management and analysis, and development of research hypotheses and analytic strategies.
The postdoctoral fellowship is a 24-month, full-time appointment. Reappointment for additional years may be possible, depending on the fellow’s performance and the availability of additional funds. A doctoral degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field is required. Applicants must have defended their dissertation prior to beginning the fellowship, and must be within three years of completing their doctorate. Preferred candidates will have:
Previous experience in relevant research areas including cancer survivorship and occupational health disparities, or more broadly, cancer disparities, health disparities, or women’s health.
Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, including effective oral/written communication, as evidenced by publications or grant-writing experience.
Proficient computer and quantitative analysis skills including ability to use statistical packages and proficiency in navigating and maintaining databases. Experience with epidemiological analysis methods preferred, including logistic and linear regression, complex sample analyses, etc.
