Florida Hospital Transplant Institute’s Heart and Lung Transplant Program is seeking an experienced cardiothoracic surgical PA to join our growing & thriving practice. Our service currently consists of 3 surgeons and 2 Surgical Pas working collaboratively with the Cardiology and Critical Care Medical teams. We perform the full spectrum of advanced heart failure surgical therapies as well as core cardiothoracic procedures. This position will regularly be performing CABG, valve surgery, thoracic aortic work, Ventricular Assist Device, heart and lung transplant and ECMO with anticipation of total artificial heart implantation by 2018. We are a busy practice having performed 20 lung transplants, 52 heart transplants and 57 VADs in 2016. We are on track to exceed these volumes in 2017. We are currently the #1 heart transplant program by volume, in the southeast region with surgeons of Dr. Duane Davis, who was past president of ISHLT; Dr Scott Silvestry, who currently teaches other surgeons on VAD implant techniques for the industry; and Dr Don Botta, Transplant and VAD Surgical Director. Mon-Fri 7 am – 5 pm, with 24 hrs call shifts and weekend rotation

The Physician Assistant (PA) supports the clinical operation of Florida Hospital Transplant Institute with primary focus on clinical services in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Inpatient Responsibilities include Pre-operative admission; consultation; evaluation and medical optimization; Intra-Operative 1st and 2nd assistance; autonomous invasive bedside procedures; Post-operative ICU, floor patient care and discharge, including prescription writing. Outpatient Responsibilities include Pre & Post- Operative clinic, Out-Of-Hospital patient clinical phone call management, Donor call organ assessment & operative call-in. Delivery of patient care will be conducted in collaboration with faculty surgeons and physicians. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
Master’s Degree in PA Studies (unless Graduated prior to 2008)
Minimum of two (2) years’ post-graduation clinical experience or one year post-graduate surgical residency training experience
Minimum of one year of cardiothoracic specialty specific experience
Pre-Operative, Intra-Operative, Post-operative Surgical patient care experience
Critical care experience
Cardiothoracic anatomic and patho-physiologic knowledge
Cardiothoracic & critical care clinical management knowledge, with sound clinical judgement, decision-making and problem solving skills
Ability to self-direct and work without direct supervision
Conduit Vein harvesting open/endoscopic
Conduit Arterial harvesting open
Surgical 1st assistance training & Proficiency
Bedside cardiothoracic surgical procedural skills
Central Venous Line Access, Arterial line placement, PA catheter placement, Open tube thoracotomy
Inpatient surgical service cooperative participation skills
Strong interpersonal and written & verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain effective relationships/flexibility with patients, families & all multidisciplinary team members
Computer skills & ability to work effectively across multiple electronic medical record platforms (MS Office Platform)

Develops and evaluates treatment of care plans for patients with acute, chronic, and surgical concerns. Functions within the Outpatient and Inpatient acute care settings.
Participates in Clinical and multidisciplinary rounds by contributing specific surgical perspectives. Promotes integrated comprehensive patient care and assists with discharge planning.
Provides relevant patient education and counseling regarding heath status/test results/disease process and discharge planning.
Performs first and second surgical assist duties within the Operating room and/or bedside setting. Assist physicians with Heart and Lung Transplantation; Ventricular Assist Devices; and Cardiothoracic Surgeries.
Actively participates in regulatory-related data collection and surveys agencies. Participates in the preparation of regulated data reporting for regulatory agencies i.e. DNV, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTRAMACS).
Serving as an expert resource and point-of-contact on clinical and protocol-related issues. Maintains a current understanding of changes in respect to accrediting bodies
Participates in the preparation of action plans in response to recommendations for improvement and deficiencies identified by regulatory agencies. Participates in mock surveys and self-assessments, focusing on continual readiness.
Providing in-service and continuing education for staff within the scope of the Transplant Program.
Call requirements will be rotational to include a 24-hour/7-day coverage system. Out-Of-House SICU and Floor call responsibilities, Donor call organ assessment & OR call responsibilities.
Utilizes sensitivity, responsiveness, caring and compassionate attitude with patients, families and visitors by listening and communicating effectively with courtesy, consideration and tact.
Attends and participates in transplant team meetings including Patient Review Committee, hospital interdisciplinary rounds, discharge planning and QAPI. Communicates with the transplant team in a professional and effective manner. Participation in database & clinical research.
Performs additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by Assistant Director or physician team.
