Located in Nashville, Tennessee, and operating at a global crossroads of teaching, discovery and patient care, VUMC is a community of individuals who come to work each day with the simple aim of changing the world. It is a place where your expertise will be valued, your knowledge expanded and your abilities challenged. It is a place where your diversity — of culture, thinking, learning and leading — is sought and celebrated. It is a place where employees know they are part of something that is bigger than themselves, take exceptional pride in their work and never settle for what was good enough yesterday. Vanderbilt's mission is to advance health and wellness through preeminent programs in patient care, education, and research.
You are a stellar coder in a major language (such as Python, C++, or Java), and a Linux nerd as well, and now you also want to be a great data scientist. But you want to use your talents for something more meaningful than selling stuff to people.
We are the Computational Medicine Lab - an innovative research lab at VUMC
(Department of Biomedical Informatics) and possibly the first group in the world to use deep learning over routinely collected clinical data. Our goal is to develop cutting-edge, data-driven tools that increase our understanding of disease and improve clinical practice.
In your first year with us , we expect that you will:
Become an expert in the basics of applied machine learning, including data preparation, model training and tuning, and model evaluation; and become fluent in the top machine learning / data-science packages for Python, such as pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and Keras;
Use that knowledge to run large-scale computational experiments over two million patient records, distributed over multiple CPUs and GPUs, as appropriate;
Own the care and feeding of our multicore Linux compute server, including installing and configuring new services as needed.
Install, configure, and maintain one or two new computational tools as web services, writing front end code that produces intuitive and interactive visualizations of our data and models; and maintaining the backend SQL database, which periodically communicates with our Netezza box;
Gain a great understanding of clinical data and the relationships between them: laboratory tests, billing codes, clinical text documentation, etc.
Be an essential resource of computing knowledge for students and post-docs in our lab as they pursue their various research projects.
If this is you, please send us your resume.
Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 2 years of relevant experience
