Under the direction of the nurse, performs basic patient care related tasks that contribute to the maintenance of a safe and comfortable patient environment. Serves as communication center for nursing unit. Responsible for the completion of work in all areas of business pertaining to the functioning and operation of the nursing unit and medication management clinic. This includes facilitating communication for the unit, processing of patient medical records, transcribing of physician orders, data entry and retrieval via utilization of various hospital information systems, completion of the departmental reports and log books, organization of the unit work area and support to the operations of patient care services, and maintaining stock level of routine supplies.
EDUCATION: High School graduate or equivalent. Successful completion of Nursing Assistant course within one year.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: BLS certification issued through American Heart Association required within the first week of employment. NCPI or equivalent within 2 months of hire.
SKILLS: Must be able to pass skills competency checklist applicable to department. Must be able to read, speak, and write English fluently. Excellent communication (verbal, written, listening) skills. Excellent phone etiquette and multi-line telephone skills. Basic computer, typing and data entry skills. Good organization and time management skills. Detail oriented and capability of performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to read, speak, and write English fluently. Basic experience operating facsimile and duplicating equipment preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Six months in a healthcare or behavioral healthcare related field preferred and/or one year in a clerical role.

Works irregular hours, multiple simultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to infectious diseases and x-rays. Subject to varying unpredictable situation. May work irregular hours. Multiple simultaneous activities around maintenance of desk and clerical duties in nursing unit. Exposure to infectious diseases. May perform prolonged work at computer station.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle emergency/crisis situation, prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics. Frequently lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients or equipment. Hearing and visual acuity within normal limits for working environment. Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination required.
