Join the Medical Service of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Boston, Massachusetts as a Genetic Counselor, Part-time, 20 hours / week.
The Genetic Counselor will join a group of two clinical geneticists within the Medical Service of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), geographically located in Boston, Massachusetts. The genetic counselor will work in both clinical and research settings. Clinically, he/she will counsel patients at increased risk for genetic disease based on their personal and/or family history. He/she will also participate in various aspects of clinical research: from subject recruitment through writing of manuscripts.
As a member of VHA Genetic service managing a broad-range of genetic counseling services for Veterans and their families, the Genetic Counselor will:
Identify and interpret the risks of an inherited disorder
Collect personal and family histories for men and women who attend the genetics clinics;
Provide education, including risk assessment as part of genetic counseling to families with hereditary syndromes
Suggest appropriate genetic testing;
Ensure test results are appropriately documented and communicated to patients and providers;
Interpret information about disorders and intervention options where available;
Explain inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence
Develop educational opportunities for patients and providers regarding inherited genetic syndromes.
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling and a valid genetic counselor license
Previous genetic counseling work experience is preferred
Good communication skills, writing skills and an ability to work independently
