The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) is seeking a Hospice and Palliative Care Physician to join Geriatrics and Extended Care Service.
The Physician serves as a staff Hospice and Palliative Care Physician for the Geriatric and Extended Care Service (GEC). This duty will involve clinic rotations, Consults service rotations, Community Living Center rotations and performing call duties as required. The GEC service primarily treats veterans 65 years of age and older.
The Physician will provide the best possible care to our veterans to include primarily Hospice and palliative care but also includes primary medical care and treatment services within assigned areas and collaborate with mid-level practitioners as assigned. The provider will also provide prompt diagnostic assessment and evaluation, including full history and physical exam, appropriate labs, radiological imaging, consultations, documentation of the evaluation and appropriate coding for billing in progress notes, communication with admitting teams, and discharge planning on all patients.
- Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: It is preferred that the candidate is board certified/eligible in Geriatrics or Hospice and Palliative care asCTVHCS is affiliated with Texas A&M University Health Science Center andhas an active teaching program. It is also preferred the candidate has experience working ina hospice and palliative care setting.
PHYSICIAN STAFF REQUIREMENTS:
Staff Physician: None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs); light carrying (15 lbs and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
