Outpatient, Inpatient and long term care patient examinations; completes surgical consults.
Coordinates and directs proper care for patients in conjunction with privileged and credentialed physicians, including coordination of outside care in the community and referrals to VA tertiary care facilities.
Displays clinical competency through effective and thorough clinical diagnosis; documenting of symptoms/observations and care plan.
Ordering specialty care studies, diagnostics, and patient pre/post operation requirements. DEA licensing preferred.
Assist in intraoperative care of patients to include pre-operative work-ups and post-operative care.
Participates in on-call coverage of the Surgical Services.
Maintain professional standards of conduct and training.
Maintain professional certification.
Work effectively and courteously with patients, families or significant others, and with surgical staff and members of other services.
Provide effective care to patients; i.e. assesses, plans, implements, documents, evaluates patient care; manages care for assigned patients; initiates effective actions in emergencies.
Uses sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating patient care; as assessed by ongoing peer and supervising physician review.
Accurately documents and reports care. Completes medical records on a timely basis, per staff bylaws.
Actively involved in the management of clinics and surgeries, to improve efficiency of patient care in coordination with the attending surgeon.
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.
Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (AEC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Current and continuous certification by the national Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent will be required to lift a maximum of 50 pounds and pushing/pulling a maximum of 40 pounds daily. The position also intel's sitting, walking, standing, climbing, kneeling, bending, twisting, and reaching above the shoulders. Incumbent will also be exposed to chemicals and solvents.
