The Philadelphia VAMC seeks board-certified or board-eligible internal medicine or family practice physicians to provide around the clock coverage to patients admitted to acute medical/surgical units along with general internal medicine consultation services. The incumbent functions as the Hospitalist on Duty (HOD) and is responsible for provision of care to a cohort of acute care patients for day or night coverage (8 or 12-hour shifts) including weekends and federal holidays. The applicant should have experience in the management of medical and surgical conditions requiring hospitalization, be competent in performing routine hospital procedures such as lumbar punctures and central line placements, and be committed to in engaging in ongoing process improvement.
The Philadelphia VA Medical Center is closely affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and there is an academic or teaching acute medicine service. Teaching opportunities may be available to qualified candidates.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
-Daily rounds, physical examination, reviewing progress notes, labs, x-rays, and other chart data and writing progress notes during the day. Daytime or night time coverage would provide appropriate charting for any change of status of the patient including updates for change of medication, transfers to other units and new radiographic findings that change patient management during the "coverage" hours.
-Provider history and physicals or transfer acceptance notes and medical care plans to all patients assigned to the in-patient non-teaching service up to the capacity of the service.
-Provide inpatient medical consultation.
- Coordinate care with the nurse care coordinators, social work service, rehabilitation services, consultation services, interventional services and outpatient primary care to facilitate excellent quality of patient care, efficiency and good outpatient follow-up. All patients can be followed with-in the VA primary care so this enhances good patient care.
- Respond to all medical emergencies in the hospital while on duty and assist or run codes until the emergency response team is on site.
- Provide accurate and helpful sign-outs (or hand-offs) to the next team.
-Complete discharge summaries within 24 hours of discharge as well as communicating discharge to primary care provider.
- Participate in any on-going hospital initiatives as deemed appropriate such as quality improvement initiatives, clinical pathways etc.
-Oversight of physician extenders will be required, though the extenders work predominantly day shifts.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Work Schedule: Full-time- Weekday and Weekend Shifts to include Federal and Non- Federal Holidays.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
