The primary responsibilities of the Director of Nursing (DON) are to assume authority, responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing services in the facility. Administration of the Pannill Healthcare center – through mission, vision, standards, interdepartmental team building, strategies to promote communication and collaboration, policies & procedures, determining staffing needs, budgeting and sources of reimbursement. Additional areas of responsibility are Managing and Developing Staff, Resident Care, Quality Assurance and Assessment and Regulatory Compliance.
Education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, BSN preferred.
Must have current RN license through Virginia Board of Nursing.
Gerontological Nursing Certification preferred.
Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal regulations and the ability to ensure compliance.
Demonstrate high degree of leadership, organizational ability and communication skills.
Knowledge of long-term care management, policies, budgeting, personnel management and census development is required.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in nursing administration and supervision required.
Current CPR certification or ability to obtain; CPR instructor a plus.
Good time management; ability to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail and having good organizational skills.
Ability to work independently as part of a team, exercise flexibility, initiative, problem-solving, critical thinking, good judgment and discretion.
Ability to work with confidential information and maintain its’ integrity.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to read and comprehend all types of written materials, strong phone etiquette and ability to speak with appropriate grammar.
Operates personal computer, printer, copy machines and other general office equipment; electronic medical records preferred.
Strong customer service skills; maintain a hospitality approach when engaging all individuals.
Maintain knowledge of safety rules and regulations related directly to your department. Monitor all aspects of the employee safety and injury prevention with the department - Conduct monthly employee safety meetings. Monitor employees’ injuries and incidents to prevent future injuries. Enforce safety policies and procedures and counsel and discipline employees as required. Work with employees to prevent injuries. Use professional or job related knowledge to assess risk and safety issues and respond appropriately. Ensure all employees complete tuberculosis (PPD) testing.
Conduct employee meetings monthly and as needed. - Keep employees informed of upcoming events, policy changes, etc.
Coordinate interdepartmental work requirements and maintain strong working relationships. - Respond to residents appropriately within a reasonable time period. Attend management meetings. Help to ensure a positive working environment for staff.
Maintain positive relationship with general resident population. Responsible for responding appropriately to resident comments, questions, and complaints. - Respond to residents appropriately within a reasonable time period. Make routine rounds throughout healthcare. Investigate concerns as soon as possible. Educate and support staff with difficult situations.
Analyze, comprehend and implement Sunnyside’s policies and procedures. - Interpret policy and apply consistently and appropriately. Review policies and procedures; validate these remain current and up to date with standards and regulations.
Interact with residents and employees and have good working relationship with each. - Learn resident and employee names and call them by name when speaking with them. Be approachable and easy to communicate with.
Maintain accurate records of department purchases so that all monies are accounted for. - Develop, implement and monitor departmental budget. Submit capital requests to Executive Director or Administrator of Health Services for review. Process all purchases with appropriate paperwork for approval, payment, etc.
Interpret and follow Sunnyside personnel policies and procedures. - Ensure consistency in management of department. Ensure completion of new employee evaluations in their introductory period as well as annual evaluations for all employees. Apply attendance policy consistently for all employees. Address employee performance, attendance, attitude, communication, etc. issues as they arise and document as needed.
Ensure department personnel records are accurate. - Initiate and complete necessary paperwork to notify HR of employee status changes. Ensure department personnel roster and their status is accurate by verifying the payroll accruals bi-weekly.
Provide leadership, guidance and management to staff. - Conduct employee meetings one to one and/or groups. Make yourself available to all shifts. Hold staff accountable for actions. Be an example of professionalism at all times.
Review and update policies and procedures for healthcare. - Ensure these remain current and up to date with standards and regulations. Ensure updated policies are communicated to all staff. Ensure staff follow isolation precautions as needed.
Quality Improvement for Pannill Healthcare Center. - Review Quality Indicators (QI). Develop action plans as needed. Benchmark QI to state and national averages.
Work closely with medical directors to provide excellent care.
Be actively involved in pressure ulcer prevention. Be actively involved in fall prevention. Maintain a restorative nursing program. Monitor infection control. Be actively involved in resident nutrition and weight loss prevention.
Ensure resident rights and resident quality of life. - Investigate alleged abuse immediately. Set standards for resident ADL care. Report allegations of abuse to appropriate community and state agencies as needed in a timely manner. When rounding monitor that resident privacy is maintained.
Work with contracted groups (i.e. Therapy, Pharmacy, private duty vendors, etc.)
Approve all requests for time off for healthcare staff. Assist with schedule as needed and ensure adequate coverage. In absence of scheduler, review and approve payroll report timely. Fill in as Unit Manager or Floor Nurse if needed.
Complete evaluations and meet with all direct report staff. Review and approve evaluations performed by unit managers and/or nurses. Maintain accuracy and consistency with regard to standards and recommendations of raises.
Handle all disciplinary action for healthcare staff. - Complete investigations, paperwork, etc. Conduct meeting with staff members to discuss disciplinary action. Maintain consistency with regard to expectations.
Approve and process staff uniform and license reimbursements as well as tuition assistance if requested. -
Plan and budget for special events for healthcare staff. - Plan for annual nurses and C.N.A weeks. Have events throughout the year to promote engagement and show appreciation to all healthcare staff.
Ensure survey book is up to date and available for surveyors when they arrive. Continually educate staff.
